Formant Preamp guide

Keep inputs individual,
standardize the work that follows.

A detailed introduction and operation manual for Formant Preamp. Use it to review the product before purchase or to learn the basics after installation.

Overview

What is Formant Preamp?

Formant Preamp is a Vocal Front-End Conditioning Processor that analyzes vocal signals recorded under different conditions and brings them toward a consistent working standard for downstream processing.

It does not turn every voice into the same sound. It absorbs simple differences in input conditions at the boundary while preserving the individuality of the singer, microphone, vocal delivery, voice quality, and expression.

Nonuniform recordings → Input analysis → Front-end processing → Internal working standard → Mix ChainIt aligns the starting point for downstream work, rather than the tone itself.
Signal path

Internal processing

Input Analysis

It observes Peak, Active RMS, Current RMS, Crest Factor, Dynamic Range, and active audio duration as the basis for processing decisions.

Level Conditioning

Using active audio regions as the reference, it brings the signal toward the Working Level that forms the starting condition for downstream processing. This is not simple Peak Normalize.

Low Frequency Cleanup

It observes unwanted low-frequency components and reduces them conservatively, avoiding the voice’s fundamental and necessary body.

Transient / Dynamics

It applies light control only when prominent peaks or excessive Crest Factor interfere with downstream stability. It does not compress the signal into a finished sound.

F3 Tracking

It tracks candidates mainly in the 2–4 kHz range, supporting vocal presence and forward projection only as needed.

F4 Tone Control

It tracks candidates mainly in the 3.5–5 kHz range and the tonal balance, gently adjusting the qualities that help the voice cut through and sound clear.

Output Standardization

It brings together the level differences remaining after each processing stage and prepares the output for downstream use, prioritizing safe peaks.

WAIT / HOLD

It does not increase processing within the acceptable range. Stages without supporting analysis remain on standby; only the necessary stages operate.

Downstream impact

Why Comp, EQ, and Saturation work together

When input level, peaks, dynamics, unwanted low frequencies, and the frequency region of vocal presence differ greatly between sources, even the same downstream Chain responds differently. Adjusting a compressor’s Threshold also changes the input to EQ and Saturation, triggering a chain of readjustments each time.

Formant Preamp first organizes the input differences that can be absorbed mechanically. Downstream, you can reduce adjustments needed only because recording conditions differ and focus on Compression, EQ, Character, and spatial processing suited to the song.

Basic operation

Basic operation

  1. Insert at the front of the vocal Chain

As a general rule, insert it before the Comp, EQ, and Saturation used to shape the tone.

  2. Play a representative passage

Play a passage that includes quiet and loud singing, breaths, choruses, and similar variations so the input can be analyzed. Processing continues to follow the material during playback.

  3. Check the analysis display

Check Peak, RMS, Crest Factor, Dynamic Range, Low Cleanup, the GR values, F3/F4 Candidate, and other readings.

  4. Accept WAIT / HOLD as it is

0.00 dB and WAIT are not errors. They indicate that processing is unnecessary or that there is not enough observation to make a decision.

  5. Use Bypass to compare with the original

Check that voice quality and expression have not changed unnecessarily, without being misled by volume differences alone.

  6. Begin downstream processing

Using the signal that has passed through Formant Preamp as the reference, build the required Comp, EQ, Saturation, and spatial effects chain.

Insert at the front of the Chain→Play a representative passage→Check analysis status→Compare with Bypass→Continue to mixing

Use RESET ANALYSIS when you replace the material or want to restart observation from the beginning.

Reading the display

Understanding the readings

PEAK / RMS

The instantaneous maximum and the average levels of the current and active audio regions. These provide the reference for Level Conditioning and output standardization.

CREST FACTOR

The difference between peak and average level. It helps determine whether the material contains prominent peaks.

DYNAMIC RANGE

The observed range of signal levels. It becomes a candidate for Dynamic Conditioning only when this range is excessively wide.

LEVEL GAIN / GR

The level correction currently applied and the Gain Reduction produced by Transient / Dynamics processing.

F3 / F4 CANDIDATE

The frequency candidates currently being tracked, their confidence, and processing status. Frequencies move with the voice and vocal delivery.

ACTIVE TIME

The accumulated time used in analysis as active audio. Some stages hold off on decisions when this time is short.

Known limitations

When automatic tracking does not fit

With vocal sounds such as Japanese “fu”, strong air blasts, or extremely close recording, local peaks or proximity effect may temporarily be picked up as formant candidates. When unwanted components are stronger than the voice’s own information, automatic tracking alone cannot separate them completely.

If Bypass comparison reveals unnatural changes, do not use it on that material, or first repair air-blast artifacts, clipping, and serious noise.

Formant Preamp is not a product that fully repairs extreme proximity effect, air-blast artifacts, clipping, serious recording defects, or complex noise.
Non-destructive

The original audio is not directly altered

Formant Preamp processes audio in real time in your DAW without rewriting the input material itself. Bypass returns you to the original sound. To commit the processed audio, use Bounce in your DAW.

Its responsibility is to prepare a vocal signal for downstream processing. Tone and expression specific to the work are decided later in the chain.

With Vocal Prep

How the two tools divide the work

Vocal Prep

Organize the source material itself. Silence, regions, timing, and levels between sources are processed in a form you can review.

Formant Preamp

Bring the organized material toward a working standard that makes downstream processing easier. It automatically follows the signal during playback.

Recorded material→Vocal Prep→Render / Bounce→Formant Preamp→Melodyne→Comp / EQ if needed→Saturation→Spatial effects
ShushuLab philosophy

Remove manual work that is not art,
leaving expressive decisions to people.

Instead of asking people to absorb differences in external input every time, convert them to a working standard at the boundary. Formant Preamp is a front end that lets downstream work begin with the actual mixing decisions.
